Ohio man convicted in shootings after IDing himself to doorbell camera, leaving wallet behind

It took a Franklin County jury about five hours to convict a man after doorbell camera video showed him introducing himself before shooting into his girlfriend's parents' home, less than an hour before fatally shooting a man in an unrelated incident.

Dwight Turner Jr., 35, faced a murder charge in connection with the March 3, 2021, death of 34-year-old Ronald Lamar Jones.

Turner also faced charges of felonious assault and firing a weapon into a home after multiple shots were fired into a home on the city's Southeast Side that same night.

After two days of deliberating, the jury convicted Turner on one count of murder, felonious assault and the weapons charge but found him not guilty of another count of felonious assault and an alternate count of murder.

Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Carl Aveni also convicted Turner of having weapons after previous felonious assault convictions.

Turner will be sentenced at a later date.

According to testimony at Turner's trial: Around 10 p.m. March 3, 2021, Turner went to a home on the 3200 block of Payday Lane, where the parents of a former girlfriend lived. Turner is seen on the home's doorbell camera knocking on the door and saying "It's Dwight" while asking for the woman.

After no one answered the door, Turner took several steps backward, according to the video, and fired multiple shots into the home, damaging several windows. Neither of the two people inside were hurt, according to testimony at trial.

Turner then left but dropped his wallet as he was leaving.

About 45 minutes later, Columbus police got a call about a man shot on the 100 block of Oakley Avenue, in the Hilltop neighborhood.

Officers found Jones, who lived in the area, with multiple gunshot wounds. He died from his injuries at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene identified Turner as the shooter, according to trial testimony. Turner turned himself into police the following day.

While in the Franklin County jail awaiting trial, Turner wrote a letter to the parents of his former girlfriend, according to trial testimony, admitting to the shooting and apologizing for damaging their home.
