Officials declare snow emergencies in Stevens Point and Plover

Snowfall predictions between 4 and 8 inches and a Winter Weather Warning for Portage County have caused officials to issue snow emergency orders in Stevens Point and Plover.

The Stevens Point snow emergency is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Tuesday and last until 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza. No one may park, stop or leave standing a vehicle on any street or portion of a street during that time.

The snow emergency also prohibits on-street overnight parking during that time. Vehicles in violation of the snow emergency will be subject to tickets and towing. Off-street parking options are available at StevensPoint.com/parking.

The village of Plover has declared a snow emergency from noon Tuesday until noon Wednesday, according to a village news release. No one may park, stop or leave standing any vehicle on the village streets or any portion of a village street.

The chief of police or his officers have authorization to tow vehicles in violation of the snow emergency at the owner's expense.

Central Wisconsin communities can expect to see from 4 to 8 inches of snow, depending on where they are, Tim Uhlmann, National Weather Service meteorologist in Green Bay, told a Stevens Point Journal reporter Monday morning. Communities farther to the east, like Stevens Point, could see more snow. The heaviest snowfall is likely to hit during the day Tuesday.

"When people wake up, they'll probably see an inch or two, which is no big deal in Wisconsin," Uhlmann said. "Then snow will become more moderate, possibly heavy, with wind picking up and reduced visibility."

As people go further east on Wisconsin 29, the snow will get heavier, Uhlmann said.

A Winter Weather Warning has been issued for Portage, Waushara and Waupaca counties in central Wisconsin from 3 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday. A Winter Weather Watch is in effect from late Monday night until late Tuesday night for Wood and Marathon counties.
