Officials: Body found in Piscataqua River was bridge jumper

May 9—Authorities say a body found in the Piscataqua River near Newington last week was that of a man who had jumped into the river from a bridge a month ago.

On Thursday, the Department of Safety confirmed in a news release that the body found "is related to the April 10, 2024 incident along the Interstate 95 high-level bridge in Portsmouth."

Police were called on the morning of April 10 by a driver who reported seeing someone climb over the metal railing of the Piscataqua River Bridge in Portsmouth and jump toward the water.

A search by state, federal and local emergency personnel failed to locate the person.

A man's remains were recovered from the river by first responders on the evening of May 3 near Fox Point Road and Windswept Way in Newington. The body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. No identity was released.
