OBJ? Or McCaffrey, perhaps? Here’s who Chiefs could really use: SportsBeat KC podcast

Silly season is starting a bit early in the NFL.

Rumors have been flying of late about the next destinations for star players like Odell Beckham Jr. and Christian McCaffrey. Chiefs fans are part of the whirlwind, and so is tight end Travis Kelce, who reportedly restructured his contract to clear cap space, should the team be looking to make a midseason addition: Bring Beckham to Kansas City, Kelce hinted on another podcast this week.

Separating what might from what should happen is the hot topic on today’s SportsBeat KC podcast with KC Star Chiefs beat writers Jesse Newell and Herbie Teope. Columnists Sam McDowell and Vahe Gregorian also take part in the conversation, and the consensus seems to be that this team has bigger needs to fill than wide receiver.

What might those be, you ask? The pass rush and pass-blocking, for starters. Those issues were amplified in last weekend’s lost to the Buffalo Bills, and now the Chiefs take on the NFL’s top-ranked defense, when they play the San Francisco 49ers on the road Sunday.

Today’s podcast participants also discuss a lack of production from the Chiefs’ rookie class ... and why this season still offers those youngsters plenty of time for improvement, not to mention more meaningful contributions.
