NYSAIS field hockey: Rye Country Day and Hackley win semis, will face each other Friday

The showdown will be a familiar one.

And, if tradition holds, a close one.

Last year, Rye Country Day edged Hackley 1-0 to capture the New York State Association of Independent Schools field hockey title.

That was the Wildcats' fifth consecutive NYSAIS championship win.

Hackley would like to end the Wildcats' streak right there.

Friday, the teams will meet again in the final with Rye Country Day holding the top seed and the Hornets at No. 2.

That meeting follows both winning their semifinal games Wednesday.

Rye Country Day romped over Horace Mann 5-0, while Hackley and Fieldston, the Ivy League co-champions, went to overtime scoreless before the Hornets scored for a 1-0 win.

Teacher nets dramatic game-winner for Hackley

Hackley dominated but had nothing to show for it through two halves due largely to the strong play of Fieldston goalie Lily Burnside, who'd finish with 12 saves.

But Burnside couldn't stop Zora Teacher's shot with 4:14 remaining in sudden-victory overtime.

Hornet keeper Reagan Begley had four saves.

Rye Country Day advances via shutout

Rye Country Day's win was also a shutout but a much less dramatic one.

Julia Heintz and Kate Keating each had a pair of goals and Greta Leslie scored once.

Clare Keating had an assist.

Horace Mann put only one shot on goal and goalie Olivia Thomas stopped it.

Melissa Migdon had eight saves for the Lions.

Friday's Wildcat-Hornet championship game will be played at SUNY-Purchase, starting at 2:30 p.m.
