N.Y. Assembly District 35: Hiram Monserrate loses latest bid for comeback against veteran lawmaker

Hiram Monserrate, an ex-con and perennial New York politician expelled from the state Senate for assaulting his girlfriend, lost his latest comeback bid to win a Queens Assembly seat.

Monserrate, who was previously close with Mayor Adams, was trailing by about a nearly 2-1 margin in his Democratic primary bid to unseat incumbent Jeffrion Aubry.

Aubry had 2,275 votes, or 62% while Monserrate had 1,399, or 38%, with 3% of the votes counted.

Aubry, who has represented the district for three decades, turned aside a similar challenge by Monserrate in 2020.

Adams was among eight state senators who voted not to expel Monserrate in 2010 after he was convicted of misdemeanor assault for beating up his girlfriend.

Monseratte pleaded guilty in 2012 to federal corruption charges related to his misuse of city funds while serving as a Council member. He was sentenced to two years in prison.

Since his release, the former official has tried to run for various public offices, including an unsuccessful 2020 challenge against Aubry.

Aubry, who won that primary by a roughly 2-1 margin, doesn’t seem worried this go-’round either. He has run a quiet race and reports no recent fundraising efforts in the district that includes East Elmhurst and Corona.
