NYC Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia mulls mayoral run

Kathryn Garcia has her eye on Gracie Mansion, Mayor de Blasio said Wednesday.

The city’s sanitation commissioner told him she was considering a run for mayor several months ago, he said, but she’s yet to make a final decision.

Wearing many hats, Garcia has overseen the city’s massive effort to provide meals to New Yorkers reeling from the devastating economic effects of coronavirus.

She was also the mayor’s “lead czar” as the feds probed toxic paint at public housing earlier in de Blasio’s tenure.

“She’s been an outstanding commissioner, obviously, and done great work not only at Sanitation, but on addressing the food crisis now and the issues around eradicating lead poison in the city,” Hizzoner said at a press conference.

“[I] do not know if it’s something she is going to move forward with, but all I know is it’s something she’s considering and she’s a very worthy person,” he added.

Politico first reported Garcia’s mayoral ambitions, which come as the city is facing growing trash problems, on Wednesday.

The increasingly crowded field of candidates for the 2021 mayoral contest includes Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Council Speaker Corey Johnson, City Comptroller Scott Stringer and former de Blasio aide Maya Wiley.
