Hochul: NY Thruway worker dead, another injured after crash

New York State Police closed the eastbound lanes of the New York state Thruway near Exit 47 on Thursday afternoon following a deadly crash on the highway.

The one-vehicle crash occurred at mile marker 368, between exit 47 (Le Roy) and Exit 46 (Henrietta) just before 12:30 p.m., according to State Police. All eastbound lanes are closed as troopers investigate at the scene.

Eastbound motorists are being diverted off the highway at Exit 47 and can reenter Interstate 90 at Exit 46, troopers said. Troopers said they expect the closure to last for several hours.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday said that a maintenance worker was killed and a second was seriously injured while they were setting up a work zone on Interstate 90 in Henrietta.

"We are heartbroken over this senseless death, praying for the recovery of the injured worker and grateful to first responders who sprang into action to support their fellow public servants," she said. "This incident is a tragic reminder: responsible driving is a life-saving skill, and all New Yorkers should remain alert, slow down and move over when approaching a work zone or stopped vehicle.”

Further details of the fatal crash were not released.
