NY Giants, NFL draft live updates: What will the Giants do in Round 1? How to watch

EAST RUTHERFORD - The build-up for the NFL Draft from the perspective of the New York Giants essentially began around Thanksgiving when last season was teetering on unexpected doom.

While Big Blue rallied down the stretch for three wins with Tommy DeVito leading the way and another over the Eagles in the finale, the second campaign for Brian Daboll as head coach in Joe Schoen's second year as general manager ended well short of expectations.

A playoff team in Year 1, eyeing the No. 1 pick in the draft for much of Year 2.

Now, as the draft festivities are set to begin five months later in Detroit, the Giants are sitting at No. 6 overall, and there's a strong likelihood most if not all of the first-round drama begins with Big Blue.

I can envision all of these players being their pick: Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze. If Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels go 1-2 as anticipated, the Giants are guaranteed of getting one of those players. Will they stay at 6?

When is the NFL draft?

The draft begins Thursday night at 8 p.m. with Round 1. It continues Friday, beginning at 7 p.m., with Rounds 2 and 3. It concludes Saturday, beginning at noon, with Rounds 4 through 7.

When do the Giants pick in the NFL draft?

  • Round 1, Pick 6

  • Round 2, Pick 47 (acquired via trade with Seahawks for Leonard Williams)

  • Round 3, Pick 70

  • Round 4, Pick 107

  • Round 5, Pick 166 (acquired via trade from 49ers through Panthers)

  • Round 6, Pick 183

Is J.J. McCarthy convinced he's going to be a Giant?

J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback from Michigan, is certainly in the mix for the Giants as they consider what to do with their first pick, currently the No. 6 overall selection. Will Big Blue trade up, as I predicted in my mock draft they would do to No. 3 with the Patriots for North Carolina QB Drake Maye? That's not unrealistic if New England is willing to deal.

But there has been plenty of debate as to how much the Giants like McCarthy, who has visited East Rutherford and worked out for team brass on Easter Sunday in Ann Arbor, not to mention the lengthy dinner the night before at a local Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

There has been speculation that the Giants aren't that into McCarthy from several national outlets, yet on Wednesday's Rich Eisen Show, McCarthy was asked if he had a team he thought would be the front-runner to take him.

McCarthy spent the next 30 seconds or so praising the Giants, mentioning Daboll, "Mr. Schoen," offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka and quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Shea Tierney all by name. That level of praise absolutely seemed genuine. Check out the video here: watch McCarthy interview with Rich Eisen.
