Three US Marshal Task Force officers were killed and four other officers were injured by gunfire in a Charlotte, North Carolina shooting on Monday afternoon.

Three of the injured officers are in stable condition, while one is in critical condition, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters on Monday evening.

At least one suspected shooter is dead, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. There were two additional people inside the home in east Charlotte. Police have since taken them into custody. The active situation ended around 5 pm local time.

“CMPD and other law enforcement agencies will be at the scene to conduct the investigation,” police said. “Some roadways in the neighborhood will remain closed. Please remain patient and cooperate with officers.”

The US Marshals Task Force, made up of officers from multiple agencies, was “conducting an investigation in the area ...when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject,” police said.

Officials have yet to release information on the suspect’s identity.

Multiple victims have been transported to nearby hospitals.

“As the community reels from this senseless act of violence, thoughts and prayers pour out for the wounded officers and their families,” the page description reads.

“In response to this devastating event, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to provide support for those affected, offering a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of this tragedy.”

The page has set a target of $250,000.

Tyler Wilson, a resident of the neighbourhood where the active shooting unfolded, told local outlet WBTV that police officers came into his home, including one who appeared to use his window to operate a sniper rifle.

Mr Wilson told the outlet an injured officer was dragged through his home by his shoulders. He described the active scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard.

The active shooter situation that resulted in “numerous” injured police officers has now ended, officials said around 5 pm local time.

“At least one shooting suspect was located deceased at the residence after clearing the scene,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on X.

The area in eastern Charlotte, North Carolina is now safe and residents no longer need to shelter in place, officials said.

Local police have issued several warnings in the last hour reminding residents to stay away from the shooting scene in eastern Charlotte, North Carolina.

In the last hour, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has posted on X three times warning people to steer clear.

“This is still an active scene,” the department wrote at 4.18 pm local time, over two hours after the incident was first announced. “Please continue to avoid the area.”

Local outlet says armoured vehicle was driving through neighbourhood yards

Local outlet WSOC-TV 9 reports their helicopter captured aerial footage of an armoured vehicle driving through yards and knocking over bins in Charlotte.

Officers then removed a person with blood on their shirt before loading them into an ambulance, the outlet reports.

An unknown number of law enforcement officers have been injured. WSOC-TV 9 also reports a Deputy US Marshal was killed in the Charlotte, North Carolina shooting.

Charlotte, North Carolina officials are travelling to the hospital where crews took injured officers on Monday afternoon.

Mayor Vi Lyles and City Manager Marcus Jones are en route to the hospital and monitoring the situation, local outlet WSOC-TV 9 reports.

North Carolina’s governor is monitoring the unfolding shooting in the town of Charlotte.

“I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper wrote on X.

Meanwhile, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis said he and his wife are “praying” for residents’ safety.

“An attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and serve us all,” Mr Tillis wrote on X.

Several law enforcement officers have been shot and transported to a nearby hospital, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

“Numerous law enforcement officers struck by gunfire in active situation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Monday afternoon.
