On Tuesday, Saints head coach Sean Payton informed the team that he’s stepping down after 16 years in New Orleans. Adding to the wake of NFL head coaching openings that need to be filled.

After Payton’s departure, there are now nine HC openings across the NFL. The Saints, Bears, Giants, Vikings, Raiders, Jaguars, Dolphins, Broncos and Texans are all searching for their next head man.

How long that number will last is anyone’s guess. But, with so many head coaching candidates entering second and third interviews, it seems that at least a few teams will secure their HC in the coming days.

In his 15 seasons coaching the Saints (minus his 2012 suspension), Payton amassed an outstanding 152-89 record. Payton arrived in 2006 and helped rebuild New Orleans from the rubble of Hurricane Katrina. Posting a 10-6 record in his first season and giving hope to a city when they needed it most.

A former Cowboys assistant, rumors are now swirling about a possible return to Dallas amid the Mike McCarthy playoff fallout.

But those are just rumors for now. Payton hasn’t made it clear where his future lies, but one would think at just 58-years-old, there’s still plenty of NFL coaching left in him.
