Cameron Norrie left his mark on Novak Djokovic but saw his Italian Open run end in the fourth round. The world number one was simply too solid for Norrie in a 6-3 6-4 victory that maintains his record of never having lost before the quarter-finals in Rome.

The main talking point came in the fourth game of the second set as Norrie sought to retrieve an early break. Djokovic turned his back on the play after presenting his opponent with an easy smash, only for Norrie, seemingly unintentionally, to drill the ball into the Serbian’s legs.

Djokovic gave the British number one an extremely frosty stare and there was an edge to the contest thereafter, but Norrie never really threatened to land more than a glancing blow.

The 27-year-old, who had lost both his previous meetings with Djokovic, dropped serve at the start of the contest and was kept at arm’s length through the rest of the opening set, with the six-time champion putting on a tactical masterclass.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 2-2 Cameron Norrie* - Norrie breaks back!

OH WOW! Norrie breaks Djokovic with a smash that is directed at his opponent! The ball sat up for Norrie to smash and Djokovic turned his back on the ball. Norrie struck down and the ball caught Djokovic on the ankle. Norrie immediately held his hands up but Djokovic turned and stared at Norrie for a good few seconds, very slowly walking up to the net!

Tension!

Djokovic is asked about his visit to the injury before the match in his on-court interview.

“Everyday is something,” he says. “Thankfully it felt ok and hopefully tomorrow I’m feeling better.”

Infuriatingly, Djokovic is not asked about that smash as the interview is quickly wrapped up. How?!

Norrie received extensive treatment on his upper leg and hip flexor area during the changeover, but emerges to get to 0-30 on the Djokovic serve as the six-time Italian Open champion looks to close this out.

But there is no doubt from there as Djokovic rallies back to earn a 6-3 6-4 win to advance to the quarter-finals!

Djokovic’s first serve was so impressive as he controlled the points and dictated the rallies. The final moment was a loose forehand return from Norrie that went straight into the net, and there is a short and sharp handshake as the players meet in the net.

I’m not sure if Djokovic made eye contact.

Huge break of serve, after some huge gifts from Norrie. Two errors from the baseline were followed by a double fault, as Djokovic ramped up the pressure at the crucial moment in the second set.

But you just can’t make those mistakes against Djokovic, and Norrie has now called the trainer.

Djokovic thumps down an ace to hold to love. The Serbian still isn’t very happy with the court and is trying to sweep away some of the loose clay at the baseline.

“Come on!” yells Norrie as he steers a backhand down the line and Djokovic slips on the baseline. It helps Norrie stay ahead in this second set and Djokovic is grumbling as he makes his way back to his chair.

“Sweep the court guys, sweep the court,” Djokovic says.

There was already some tension bubbling under the surface to this match after Djokovic delayed the start time by 10 minutes, after going to the treatment room before play.

But one thing you don’t want to do is provoke Djokovic, and the Serbian unleashes a lovely forehand winner to get his hold and move back to 3-3 in this second set.

Incredible - Norrie holds to edge back ahead and there is a very tense moment between the players at the changeover.

This is suddenly very, very spicy.

*Novak Djokovic 6-3 2-1 Cameron Norrie - Djokovic breaks!

11:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Shot of the match from Djokovic! A running forehand is blasted down the line and catches the corner! It moves Djokovic up 0-30 and the pressure on Norrie grows as he is forced long. Two break points, but Norrie goes long again. Djokovic moves a break and a set ahead.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 1-1 Cameron Norrie*

11:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic holds to love with a couple of wonderful points. One with a crushing forehand winner, the other a return to the drop shot to catch out Norrie. In between, Djokovic sat comfortably on his forehand to the Norrie backhand, eeking out the error.

Norrie sends an ace down the line to get the opening hold - important as he was broken in his opening service game in the first set.

Novak Djokovic 6-3 Cameron Norrie - Djokovic wins first set

11:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic’s first-serve has been awesome so far, and a forehand winner to get ahead is too. The 35-year-old then sends Norrie racing around to pop a volley over the net. First serve, forehand winner - unstoppable.

Two more set points: Norrie finds his best shot of the match as he returns Djokovic’s second serve with a backhand winner, so flat and cutting from that angle.

But then Djokovic finds his first serve and finds his spot, forcing Norrie into the miss as he ran onto his forehand side.

That’s the first set - and you’ve got to say it was a pretty comfortable one for Djokovic to win.

*Novak Djokovic 5-3 Cameron Norrie

10:57 , Jamie Braidwood

Wow - a supreme forehand winner from Djokovic, leaning back and taking the time before unloading down the line. It moves him to 0-30 on the Norrie serve, before a loose forehand from the British No 1 goes a few feet long of the baseline.

Two set points for Djokovic - but Norrie saves them both! Djokovic shot a stare at some noise in the crowd after a forehand went long on the first, before Norrie produced a big serve out wide to save the second.

And Norrie gets through. Djokovic pushes a forehand wide and Norrie hangs on, but will it be enough?

Novak Djokovic 5-2 Cameron Norrie*

10:53 , Jamie Braidwood

The unforced errors from Norrie continue to pile up, as a backhand crosscourt is pushed wide to move Djokovic a game away from the first set.

*Novak Djokovic 4-2 Cameron Norrie

10:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Is there some edginess growing here? Djokovic’s roar at the end of the previous game looks to have fired Norrie up. He connects with a couple of fine winners, and then gets a bit of a gift as Djokovic went long with a forehand down the line.

Novak Djokovic 4-1 Cameron Norrie*

10:41 , Jamie Braidwood

An interesting thing to note so far is Djokovic’s serve. He’s hitting a much slower second serve at around 76 mph, taking the pace out of the ball in a reflection of his wider approach. Djokovic has just been floating balls to the baseline and asking Norrie to produce his own pace and power, with the Serbian clearly confident that he can handle the British No 1’s offensive weapons.

Djokovic lets out a huge roar as he claims his next hold, and increases his lead to 4-1!

*Novak Djokovic 3-1 Cameron Norrie

10:38 , Jamie Braidwood

Norrie faces break point but comes up with the ace out wide to force deuce, before a flying winner down the line earns him a hold to get on the board. A start.

Novak Djokovic 3-0 Cameron Norrie*

10:35 , Jamie Braidwood

As if to illustrate that last point, Norrie tries a dropshot crosscourt from a difficult angle to concede the next game to 15. Norrie is offering a few glimpses but his weapons are not threatening Djokovic, who is in charge of this opening set.

*Novak Djokovic 2-0 Cameron Norrie - Djokovic breaks!

10:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic forces the early errors from Norrie to get the first break of the set. There is good variation from Djokovic, just asking the question of his opponent, and Norrie clips the netcord and then sends a forehand wide from 30-30, almost trying to do too much. Norrie needs to perfect here and those errors won’t do.

Novak Djokovic 1-0 Cameron Norrie*

10:25 , Jamie Braidwood

It looks like there will be a lot of long baseline rallies on slower and heavier conditions this morning in Rome - Djokovic goes to the drop shot to win the opening point, and then scrambles to lob Norrie and edge ahead 30-15. Djokovic then stays patient and takes the opening hold as Norrie goes long.

Oh, hang on. Norrie was in the tunnel, but Djokovic is apparently in the “treatment room” ahead of this last-16 clash and there is a delay to the start of this match.

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Italian Open updates

Novak Djokovic is a six-time champion at the Italian Open and has regularly used the tournament to kick-start his preparations for Roland Garros. Could today be the start of Djokovic finding his best level on clay, or will Cameron Norrie be able to grind out an upset? The players are in the tunnel and are about to make their way out onto the court.

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Can Norrie find form on clay?

10:01 , Jamie Braidwood

Cameron Norrie set up a last-16 clash with Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open thanks to a 6-2 7-6 (4) victory over Marton Fucsovics.

The British number one had looked on track for a straightforward triumph as he won the first set with minimal fuss and then stormed into a 5-1 lead in the second, only for his Hungarian opponent to fight back to 5-5.

Norrie edged the tie-break which followed, 7-4, however, as he looks to improve his recent form on clay.

Norrie has suffered early exits at his last three tournaments, with an opening defeat to Francisco Cerundolo in Monte Carlo, a second round defeat to Lorenzo Musetti in Barcelona and a third round defeat to Zhizhen Zhang in Madrid.

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Defending champion finding form

09:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic advanced to the last-16 with a 6-3 4-6 6-1 victory over Bulgarian 26th seed Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday. The Serbian overcame a sluggish start and a late comeback attempt by familiar opponent Dimitrov to get over the line in their third-round meeting.

Djokovic said: “The more matches you play, this is kind of a surface that the more matches you play, the better you will feel. Of course, I would love to play a maximum amount of matches in this tournament. That’s why I’m here.

“It’s a different scheduling this year than any other year that I played in Rome. Obviously with an extended duration of the tournament, you have a day off between matches, which in some way it’s good because you get a chance to recover more, to work on a practice court on the specifics of your game, then perform on the court in best possible way.

“I think I’m getting closer to the desired level. Of course, you can always play better, but today I had a really good quality opponent and I think I delivered for most part of the match except the last four games of the second set. Other than that I think I was really solid, served well, moved well. When I had opportunities, I was capitalizing on those opportunities.

“Just overall a really solid performance and definitely a better level than in the first match. Hopefully I can keep the same trajectory in the next one.”

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Elsewhere at the Italian Open

09:44 , Jamie Braidwood

  • World number three Daniil Medvedev earned a hard-fought 3-6 6-1 6-3 win over Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles to reach the last 16 in Rome for the first time.

  • Sixth seed Andrey Rublev also advanced after defeating Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(8) 6-3.

  • Stefanos Tsitsipas’s match against Lorenzo Sonego, as well as Alexander Zverev’s clash with J.J. Wolf were suspended due to rain and will be concluded on Tuesday. Tsitsipas had taken the first set 6-3 against Sonego while Zverev leads 6-4 3-3 against Wolf.

  • Elena Rybakina saw off Marketa Vondrousova 6-3 6-3 to reach her first claycourt WTA 1000 quarter-final, where she will face either top-ranked Iga Swiatek, the twice defending champion, or Croatia’s Donna Vekic.

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Carlos Alcaraz stunned in third round

09:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock loss to lowly-ranked Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in the third round of the Italian Open in Rome.

Alcaraz will take over from Novak Djokovic as world number one next Monday but his French Open preparations suffered a blow with a 6-3 7-6 (4) loss to 135th-ranked Marozsan.

The 23-year-old had never played in the main draw of an ATP event or beaten a top-100 player prior to arriving in the Italian capital but, having come through qualifying, he now finds himself in the last 16 of one of the biggest tournaments outside the grand slams.

“He made me feel uncomfortable on court,” Alcaraz said at his post-match press conference. “He was aggressive all the time. It was tough for me to get into the match, into the rally. I made a lot of mistakes that I usually don’t make.

“Obviously these days can happen in tennis and you have to handle it. He surprised me a lot. His level was really, really high. If he plays at that level, he’s going to surprise more than one. I’m sure he’s going to break the top 100 very, very soon.”

Novak Djokovic vs Cameron Norrie: Last time out

09:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Cameron Norrie took full advantage of a favourable draw to become just the fourth home player in the Open era to make the last four in the men’s singles Wimbledon last summer.

But trying to beat Novak Djokovic, who has not lost a match at Wimbledon since 2017, was a completely different challenge and, although Norrie made a superb start, the eventual seven-time champion hit back emphatically to win 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Norrie said: “I think it was a good experience obviously to play him. Especially the level he brings here at Wimbledon. It gives me a lot of confidence.

“But it doesn’t mean anything. I think I need to keep working hard and I’ve still got a lot of things I can improve in my game. To reach the semis, reach the Friday of the second week, is pretty sick. But I want to do more of that and go one further and try to win a slam.

“A lot of firsts for me this week, a lot of good experiences. Hopefully I can take them in my stride. Comparing to Novak, I think it was just the level of execution from him today was better than me. His level of focus, the way he handled his service games was better than me.”

Today is their first meeting since.

Good morning

Novak Djokovic continues his Italian Open defence against British No 1 Cameron Norrie as the last-16 stage begins in Rome. After Carlos Alcaraz was stunned by the world number 135 Fabian Marozsan on Monday, Djokovic has the chance to close the gap to the young Spaniard in the rankings as the Serbian continues his French Open preparations.

Djokovic has won his previous two meetings against Norrie, including in the Wimbledon semi-finals last July. This will be their first clash on clay, which is a surface Norrie has put significant time and effort to improve on this year. Norrie, the 13th seed in Rome, suffered early defeats in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid, however, and is still trying to find his rhythm ahead of Roland Garros.

As is Djokovic, who with a 2-2 record has as many defeats as victories on clay so far this season. But the 35-year-old was also on patchy form this time last year before going to win the Italian Open, as Djokovic looks to find his title-winning form before the second grand slam of the season.
