It’s been a while since Idahoans have been able to read this sentence: Gas prices in the Gem State are finally trending downward.

As of Tuesday morning, the average gas price in Idaho was $5.11 per gallon, eight cents lower than last week, according to AAA. But the Gem State still has the seventh-most expensive gas in the nation and is still far above the national average of $4.50 per gallon.

Ada County is slightly above the state average at $5.20 per gallon, but the county has seen a constant decrease in prices since gas hit $5.34 on July 3.

Even though the global gas supply remains tight, prices have decreased in the United States due to a decline in global fuel demand and the U.S. Dollar gaining strength against other currencies, according to Reuters.

“We’ve seen the national average price of gasoline decline for a fifth straight week, with the pace of recent declines accelerating to some of the most significant we’ve seen in years,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, stated in a news release.

“This trend is likely to reach a sixth straight week, with prices likely to fall again this week,” De Haan continued. “Barring major hurricanes, outages or unexpected disruptions, I forecast the national average to fall to $3.99 a gallon by mid-August.”

President Joe Biden called for oil and gas companies to lower prices further on Monday, tweeting a graphic that showed West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices dropping dramatically since early June, yet gas prices taking a much slower downward trend.

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark, one of three benchmarks in oil pricing worldwide, is trading crude oil near $106 per barrel, $14 less than last month yet $32 more than a year ago.
