Northwest Missouri State and visiting Washburn treated those in attendance to a Saturday afternoon college football thriller.

After some frantic back-and-forth scoring throughout the final quarter of Saturday afternoon’s Military Appreciation Day game, Northwest (5-2) won it 32-30 on a 36-yard field goal from Cole Lammel with 2 seconds left.

Just 22 seconds earlier, Washburn (4-3) had scored to take a 30-29 lead on a 10-yard run by Ichabods quarterback Kellen Simoncic.

Northwest quarterback Mike Hohensee completed 24 of 31 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns, but Simoncic was also more than solid: 26 of 40 for 314 yards with three TDs.

The big difference throughout the game was the Bearcats’ relentless defense, which sacked Simoncic seven times. Elijah Green led the way with 2.5 of those. Hohensee was felled just once, and neither signal-caller threw an interception.

Kashan Griffin was Hohensee’s favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Washburn’s James Letcher Jr. caught eight balls for 129 yards while Peter Afful finished with five receptions for 78 yards and two TDs.

Pittsburg State 49, Lincoln 10: At Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, Pitt State led 28-3 at halftime en route to a 39-point victory that kept the No. 7-ranked Gorillas unbeaten at 7-0.

Pitt State quarterback Chad Dodson Jr. completed 10 of 13 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, one apiece to receivers Christian Carter and Kolbe Katsis. Caleb Lewis had 10 carries for 58 yards, including a pair of touchdowns.

Pitt State will put its unblemished record on the line again next Saturday, playing host to Missouri Western for Homecoming.

Central Missouri 20, Missouri Southern 17: On Homecoming in Warrensburg, Mules quarterback Cedric Case was 28 of 36 for 274 yards to lead the hosts past the Lions. Central Missouri (2-5) led 10-7 at halftime and got a 21-yard field goal from Samuel Knowlton with 11 minutes remaining to seal it.

Southern’s Dawson Herl hit Jaedon Stoshak for a 24-yard TD with 9:01 left but could get no closer. Case’s top target was Arkell Smith, who caught eight passes for 102 yards and a TD; Nathan Glades rushed for 105 yards on 16 carries for Missouri Southern (4-3).

Emporia State 44, Nebraska-Kearney 21: The Hornets won big on the road thanks in large part to their ground game and defense. ESU running backs Billy Ross Jr. and Canaan Brooks rumbled for two touchdowns apiece, with Ross gaining 156 yards on 16 carries and Brooks contributing 85 yards on 15 carries. The Hornets improved to 5-2; Nebraska-Kearney fell to 5-2.

Missouri S&T 41, William Jewell 14: The Cardinals couldn’t hold court in Liberty, falling to 1-6 with a lopsided loss to the Miners. Missouri S&T (3-4) led 21-0 after the first quarter and by game’s end had three passing touchdowns from quarterback Staton King. Jewell didn’t score after halftime.

Central Oklahoma 35, Fort Hays State 23: At Edmond, Okla., the host Bronchos (5-2) beat the visiting Tigers (1-6), ending a four-game win streak there by Fort Hays State. Central Oklahoma is now on a four-game win streak of its own this season.
