Northwest Missouri State football takes to the road, takes down Lincoln in MIAA action

Northwest Missouri State football improved to 2-0 on the season: The Bearcats cruised by Lincoln 58-20 in Jefferson City, Missouri, on Saturday.

Bearcats quarterback Mike Hohensee had a big day. He completed 21 of 24 passes for 312 yards with three touchdowns.

Hohensee did not throw an interception and was not sacked.

Northwest Missouri rolled to 289 yards on the ground and held Lincoln to 24 yards rushing.

Northwest is set to play host to Central Missouri next Saturday. The Mules are 0-2, after losses to Pittsburg State and Washburn.

Thursday’s games

  • Chad Dodson Jr. threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Murphy with 12 seconds remaining as Pittsburg State beat No. 11 Nebraska-Kearney 35-28 on the road. Dodson was 20 of 29 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns. The Gorillas improved to 2-0 overall and in the MIAA; Kearney dropped to 1-1.

  • Behind two 100-yard rushers, Missouri Western improved to 2-0 with a 35-19 home win over Fort Hays State. Jared Scott ran for 125 yards in 12 carries and two touchdowns and Brandon Hall also scored twice, rushing for 101 yards in 13 tries.

  • Kellen Simoncic threw for six touchdown passes as host Washburn (2-0) came from behind to beat Central Missouri (0-2) 40-32. The Mules led 24-12 in the second quarter before Washburn scored four unanswered touchdowns, all Simoncic TD passes.

  • Trailing by a field goal entering the fourth quarter, Jason Shelley threw touchdown passes of 7 and 22 yards to Tyrone Scott as Missouri State, ranked fifth in the FCS, beat Tennessee-Martin 35-30 at home and improved to 2-0.
