North Jersey doctor sentenced to over two years in prison for defrauding Amtrak of $1.3M

A New Jersey doctor was sentenced to just over two years in prison for health care fraud in a scheme that targeted Amtrak and resulted in the company losing more than $1.3 million, announced U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Muhammad Mirza, 51, of Cedar Grove, and his conspirators billed the health insurance company on fraudulent claims for services that were never provided or were medically unnecessary, Sellinger stated.

Amtrak employees were also involved as they were paid to allow Mirza and others to use their patient and insurance information to submit false and fraudulent claims, according to Sellinger.

The scheme went on for five years lasting from April 2017 through June 2022.

In addition to the 26 months in prison, Mirza was also sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered restitution of $1.37 million.
