North Eugene volleyball player wins Register-Guard Athlete of the Week

North Eugene libero Sarah Speasl is The Register-Guard's Athlete of the Week.

Speasl won the newspaper's poll for top area athletes, which is voted on by readers.

The senior had 27 digs and added 10 assists and two aces leading the Highlanders to a thrilling 3-1 victory over Churchill.

Freshman forward Alonzo Reyes recorded the winning goal to help Churchill hand Springfield a 1-0 loss in a Midwestern League match.

Malachi Schoenherr, Sheldon cross country

Sophomore Malachi Schoenherr took first out of 195 runners in the boys 5,000 meter in 15:26.20 at the Umpqua Invite at Roseburg's Stewart Park.

Zari Thomas, North Eugene/Triangle Lake girls soccer

Freshman forward Zari Thomas' second half goal with three minutes remaining was the difference maker as North Eugene/Triangle Lake pulled out a 2-0 victory over Thurston.

Artana Nice, North Eugene cross country

Senior Artana Nice took first out of 147 runners in the girls 5,000 meter with a PR of 18:21.0 at the Umpqua Invite at Roseburg's Stewart Park.
