North of the Broad weekend shootings: Coroner ID’s St. Helena man killed in drive-by

The first of a pair of weekend shootings north of the Broad River left one resident injured and killed 36-year-old St. Helena man Malcolm Aiken, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office announced Monday. The second shooting resulted in a 15-year old getting shot in the leg. Beaufort County investigators have not identified suspects in either shooting.

Saturday’s drive-by shooting targeted a group of people, including Aiken, who were standing outside a Ball Park Road residence in central St. Helena. One gunshot victim was taken to Charleston’s Medical University of South Carolina, while Aiken was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:19 a.m., said Beaufort County Coroner David Ott.

Aiken’s autopsy will be completed Monday, Ott said. Funeral arrangements are pending from the Chisholm Galloway Funeral Home in Beaufort, according to the man’s obituary.

The day’s second round of gunshots rang out around 9:20 p.m. Saturday at Thoroughbred Circle in Burton, a small loop of homes in the Forest Fields subdivision. Several rounds of gunfire came from the roadway through the walls of a home, at least one of which struck a 15-year-old girl, who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Both surviving gunshot victims were still in the hospital as of 11 a.m. Monday, said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens.

Anyone with information on either of Saturday’s shootings is encouraged to call the Beaufort County non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-7777 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry tip line at 843-554-1111.
