No, Wanda Sykes Does Not Want to Host the Oscars Again After the Will Smith Slap
Many have lamented the modern era's ceaseless 24-hour news cycle, with the constant churn of (usually depressing) news making for a quick turnover in audiences's attention spans. But somehow, that doesn't yet seem to be the case for the Will Smith slap.
In case you missed it, the King Richard actor slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony after the comedian compared Jada Pinkett-Smith to G.I. Jane during an onstage monologue. Chaos ensued, with Smith later issuing an emotional apology, the Academy banning Smith from attending the ceremony for 10 years, and all of Hollywood seemingly picking sides.
And though it's been months since The Slap, people still can't seem to move on. (Cue that Titanic meme: "It's been 84 years.")
Wanda Sykes, who hosted the ceremony alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, talked about the incident in a recent interview with Live with Kelly and Ryan.
"It was just like, what is happening? It was just shock," she said, per People. "Couldn't believe it. Shocked. And then it was like… 'okay, so everybody's going to just sit here?'"
Would she ever host again?
"Oh, hell no," she said, adding, "I shouldn't say it like that. You know what, it was an amazing honor and I think it's something that you want to do. You do it once... I don't know if I would want to do it again. It's a huge job, and it took a lot of people to clean me up."
After the Oscars, Smith posted a statement regarding the incident on Instagram.
"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable," he said. "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."
