No Valentines? Celebrate Quirkyalone Day
In honor of Valentine’s Day, I have chosen to feature another unofficial holiday that is also celebrated on February 14th. This holiday is International Quirkyalone Day. Don’t let the name fool you though, this holiday isn’t antithesis of Valentine’s Day; Quirkyalone Day celebrates a different kind of romance.
The origins of this holiday are easily traceable, having been created in 2003 by Sasha Cagen who wrote Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics. In her book, Cagen defines quirkyalone as “a person who can feel whole or aspire to feeling whole while being single and so prefers to wait for the right person to come along rather than dating indiscriminately: relishing equal doses of solitude and friendship; attracted to freedom and possibility.” This concept encourages people to view themselves as whole all on their own, rather than requiring an “other half” to feel complete. Quirkyalone has a Facebook page that offers additional information on the concept.
Cagen came up with the idea of focusing self-worth on during a New Year’s Eve party and carried the idea forward as she noticed how commercialized Valentine’s Day had become. This isn’t to say that you can’t celebrate Quirkyalone if you’re in a relationship, because appreciating one’s own company and a bit of solitude is never a bad thing. Perhaps this February 14th, celebrate self-worth, self-love, and true romance either in peaceful solitude, with good friends, or maybe with that special someone if you’re lucky enough to have found them.
