When can NJ residents file 2023 federal, state tax?

Now! If you received your W-2s and have all of your paperwork, you can file both your federal and state taxes.

When does tax season start?

At the end of January. The IRS begins 2023 tax season and starts accepting and processing individual 2022 tax returns on Jan. 23.

When is the filing deadline for 2024?

The deadline for federal 2023 tax returns is April 15, 2024. The 2023 New Jersey tax returns are due the same day. This year tax day falls on a Monday.

What do I need to file my taxes?

To file your taxes you will need to gather personal information, income documents, credit and deduction statements such as:

  • Social Security number or individual tax ID number (ITIN) for you and anyone else on your return

  • Bank account and routing numbers to get a refund or pay by direct deposit

  • W-2 forms that show your wages from employers

  • Childcare or dependent care expenses

  • Home mortgage and property tax records

  • Donation receipts to charities

How can I file my 2023 taxes?

Taxpayers have two ways to file. You an file electronically online or through the mail with a paper tax form. Through e-filing, you should receive your refund faster. You can e-file with IRS Free File or tax preparation software.

When can I expect my refund?

The IRS says if you file your returns electronically, processing takes 21 days for an electronic file and four weeks with a paper return. If you file an amended tax return, it takes three weeks to show up in the IRS system and up to 16 weeks to process.

How to check the status of your 2023 tax return?

If you file electronically, you can check the status of your refund online by using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website. You will need your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number, your filing status and the exact amount on your refund.

For amended returns you can check the status of your refund online by using Where’s My Amended Return tool on the IRS website. Access to the online tool is not available from midnight to 3 a.m. Mondays and from 1-7 a.m. on occasional Sundays.

What if I do not get a W-2?

Employers are required to mail out employee W-2 forms by Jan. 31 or provide an electronic version by that time. If you don't get a W-2 by the end of February, contact your employer to confirm when the form is coming or call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

When are quarterly tax due dates?

Individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, and S corporation shareholders, generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more when their return is filed. Those taxes are due:

  • First payment: April 15.

  • Second payment: June 17.

  • Third payment: Sept. 16.

  • Fourth payment: Jan. 15, 2025.
