Nintendo has confirmed it's making a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.

The popular video game, which follows the warrior Link and magical Princess Zelda in their fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from demon king Ganon, was first released in 1986. Countless projects, from video game sequels and spin-offs to soundtracks and merchandise, have spawned since then.

According to Deadline, the upcoming live-action film adaptation will be directed by the Maze Runner franchise helmer Wes Ball. He'll also produce the movie alongside his producing partner, Joe Hartwick Jr, under their Oddball Entertainment banner. Jurassic World's Derek Connolly is writing the script.

Also producing will be Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc.

In a statement on X, Miyamoto said: "I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

"I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it."

In a statement following the announcement, Nintendo — which recently had a big hit with The Super Mario Bros Movie — outlined its plans to broaden the reach of its most famous IPs.

"By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles," the company said.

"By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible."
