A Night Without a Bed and more things to do this weekend at the Jersey Shore

Did you know that in Monmouth County approximately 200 children are homeless on any given night?

Lunch Break and Family Promise are inviting Monmouth County youth and adults to participate in Night Without A Bed to raise awareness and funds to help those who are experiencing homelessness.

This year's event runs from 6 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Athletic Club, 114 Saltzman Ave., in Oceanport. A chaperone is required for those under 18.

In addition to raising awareness, Night Without A Bed raises funds to support program operations such as food, clothing, emergency shelter, comprehensive case management, transportation, life skills training, and prevention/stabilization for families.

Participants are asked to sleep in a box for one night, in addition to raising pledges of at least $150 per individual for the cause. The goal is to raise $50,000.

Sum 41 has sold 15 million albums, and their music has surged through major franchises, ranging from "Spider-Man" to "American Pie" and "Bring It On."

The band, on a farewell tour, kicks off the Stone Pony Summer Stage season on Saturday. Tour of The Setting Sum features songs from the band's latest and final album, "Heaven :x: Hell."

At the 54th annual Grammy Awards in 2012, the band was nominated in the Hard Rock/Metal Performance category for "Blood In My Eyes." The current lineup is Deryck Whibley (vocals, guitar), Dave Baksh (guitar), Jason McCaslin (bass), Tom Thacker (guitar) and Frank Zummo (drums).

Also on the bill is The Interrupters, and the hip-hop duo Joey Valence & Brae. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and tickets start at $76 on the secondary market.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Highlands

Sip your way around town on Saturday at Highlands Business Partnership's third annual Fiesta de Mayo Cantina Crawl.

In addition to enjoying discounted food and drink specials at restaurants and pubs around town, including Bahrs Landing, Chilangos, Chubby Pickle, Off the Hook, Proving Ground, Seafarer Bar and Fresh, attendees can vote for their favorite cocktail in a "Best Margarita in Highlands" contest.

Mariachi music from the Academia de Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer will add to the fun.

Hope Walk at the Jersey Shore

The Huntington's Disease Society of America's New Jersey chapter will host the Team Hope Walk & 5K - Jersey Shore on Saturday at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como.

Registration begins and 7:45 a.m. Saturday, with the walk/run starting at 8:45 a.m. All participants and supporters will be treated to a day of fun, music, food, prizes and more — including the opportunity to learn more about Huntington's disease and the vital work being done by HDSA.

All proceeds support HDSA and its mission. Huntington’s is a fatal genetic disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and is often described as having ALS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's all at once. Today, there are approximately 41,000 symptomatic Americans, and more than 200,000 at risk of inheriting the disease.

Team Hope is HDSA’s largest national grassroots fundraising event, which takes place in over 100 cities across the U.S. and has raised more than $26 million for Huntington's disease since its inception in 2007.

Tour the Manasquan Reservoir

Look for turtles, egrets, herons, ospreys and other wildlife in their natural habitat during a boat tour of the Monmouth County Park System’s Manasquan Reservoir.

Tours are offered at the top of the hour from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, through Sept. 2. Wednesday afternoon tours are offered at 2, 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. from July 10 to Aug. 28. Evening tours are offered at 6 and 7 p.m. on the first Friday of June, July and August.

Led by a Park System Naturalist, these 45-minute tours leave from the Visitor Center on Windeler Road in Howell. All tours are weather and water level dependent.

Cost is $6, $4 per child 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in the lower level of the Visitor Center on the day of the tour. Life jackets are required and provided.

Tickets are $55. Co-written and directed by long-time collaborator Stephen Amato, "Show" chronicles Hall’s career highlights on productions like "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (for which she won a Tony Award), "Kinky Boots" and "Snowpiercer." Expect songs, storytelling and lots of laughter.

Hall starred as Miss Audrey in the TNT sci-fi drama "Snowpiercer" for four seasons alongside Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly. She has guest-starred on HBO’s "Girls," Amazon Prime’s "Good Girls Revolt" and Paramount Plus' "Evil."

In a release, Colleen Cook, executive director of Holmdel Theatre Company, said she is excited "to have Lena and her band bring a new, rock edge to the barn.” The Broadway at the Barn series was created by Cook in June 2019 with the intention of bringing the best of Broadway to New Jersey for a night.

It's always a good time for pancakes, right? And from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ray's Cafe in Sea Girt, you'll be eating for a good cause.

The restaurant is hosting a pancake dinner fundraiser the Spring Lake Theatre & Dance Academy. Dance students will serve as the hostesses and waitresses, while studio faculty assists the chefs behind the grill.

Dinner is $10. Money raised will allow the group to compete in upcoming dance competitions, and purchase necessary training equipment.

Ocean County plant sale

Master Gardeners of Ocean County host a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County in Toms River. There will be annuals, perennials, herbs, veggies, shrubs, hanging baskets and house plants. Bring your own garden cart or wagon.

"The sale offers residents native and ornamentals that are suited to Ocean County’s climate, especially our hot, humid summers," said Susan Emhardt-Servidio, senior horticulturist and Rutgers Master Gardener Program Coordinator, in an email. "We specialize in annuals, perennials and shrubs that attract monarchs, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Plus many are deer and rabbit resistant. All are hand-raised in the MG greenhouses and shrub nursery at the Ocean County Park in Lakewood."

Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Once they complete their training, Master Gardeners help the Extension better serve the home gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, working with 4-H horticultural projects, participating in civic beautification, maintaining demonstration gardens, and teaching plant sciences and horticulture.

'Musical World Tour' in Toms River

The Ocean County College Concert Band presents “A Musical World Tour,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Grunin Center for the Arts, located on OCC ‘s main campus on College Drive in Toms River.

The spring concert "transcends borders and celebrates sounds from all over the globe, including selections from England, Spain, Italy, Russia, Cuba and Korea," a news release said.

Conducted by Anthony Tafrow, attendees also will hear traditional American favorites. Tickets are $20, $10 children, plus $3 processing fee per ticket.
