'Night Swim' and 'The Painter' are among the new movies in Milwaukee theaters this week

One thing you can bank on is that there’ll be a new horror movie in theaters the first weekend of the year. At least that part of 2024 is true to form.

But if you were looking for more of 2023's late-release Oscar contenders — another frequent way the movies start a new year — you'll have to wait a little longer.

Here’s what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

‘Night Swim’

Short version: A family hoping for a new start moves into a suburban home with a backyard swimming pool — and a dark, dark secret that could pull all of them under. Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon and Amélie Hoeferle star in this horror-thriller.

Where you can see it: ACX Cinema/Bayshore; AMC Mayfair Mall; Marcus Theatres’ Bistroplex Southridge, Hillside, Majestic, Menomonee Falls, Movie Tavern Brookfield Square, North Shore, Ridge, South Shore cinemas; Silverspot Cinema.

'The Painter'

Short version: When a woman from his past resurfaces, a former CIA operative turned painter finds himself the target of a secret mission gone rogue. Charlie Weber, Madison Bailey and Jon Voight star in this thriller.

Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres' Hillside, Menomonee Falls, Ridge cinemas. (Note: "The Painter" also will be available via video-on-demand services starting Jan. 9.)

‘Airplane!’ at Marcus Theatres and Silverspot Cinema

Shorewood favorite sons David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker rewrote the rules of movie comedy with their 1980 spoof classic “Airplane!” It’s back in theaters, showing at varying times on Jan. 7 and 10 at Marcus Theatres’ Majestic and South Shore cinemas, and Silverspot Cinema. 2023’s biggest hits, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ at Times Cinema

The Times Cinema starts 2024 with the two highest-grossing movies of 2023: “Barbie,” at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 5-7 and Jan. 11; and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 6-7 and 6:30 p.m. 6 p.m. Jan. 10. Tickets are $11. Info: timescinema.com.

New movies on demand

“War Blade”: During World War II, a British special services agent must lead a mission to rescue a French resistance fighter from a secret Nazi bunker. Available Jan. 9.

New movies on streaming services

“Foe”: In this sci-fi thriller, a couple’s (Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal) quiet life on their family farm is turned upside down when a stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up with an offer of interstellar adventure — and androids. On Prime Video Jan. 5.

“Man on the Run”: This festival-hit documentary takes a deep dive into the 1MDB scandal, centered on international scam artist Jhu Low and how his political and celebrity connections helped obscure a billion-dollar swindle. On Netflix Jan. 5.

“Good Grief”: Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) plays a man who, struggling to get past the unexpected death of his husband, gets some help from his best friends, who take him along on a trip to Paris that turns out to be eye-opening for all three of them. Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel co-star in this new romantic comedy-drama, which also is Levy's directorial debut. On Netflix Jan. 5.
