Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is reportedly considering a jump to the NFL ranks. And if that happens, a current NFL head coach could be making the opposite move.

According to reports from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports on Saturday, Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule could be “at the top of the list” of options to replace Harbaugh if he leaves Ann Arbor.

“Panthers’ embattled head coach Matt Rhule would be at the top of that list, league sources indicated, with Rhule already considering several college options this past season, and with him firmly on the hot seat with owner David Tepper for 2022 after receiving an eventual vote of confidence from ownership,” La Canfora wrote.

Fans and analyst from around the league were surprised when Rhule retained his head coaching job with Carolina after a disappointing 2021 season.

Plenty of Panthers fans seem pretty happy with the idea of Rhule heading back to the collegiate level.

“Oh please leave yesss,” one wrote.

“You can have him,” another added.

“Please,please,please,please,please,please,please,” another wrote.

Just yesterday, reports indicated that Matt Rhule is expected to hire former Giants head coach Bob McAdoo as his offensive coordinator — making this possible departure all the more interesting.

La Canfora also reports that Rhule has his eye on the Penn State opening and at one point may have been interested in the former LSU vacancy.

“With Rhule facing a pivotal third year in Carolina, with an expectation for much better results, a big-time college job opening up would draw attention,” he wrote.

Matt Rhule is 10-23 through two seasons with the Panthers
