Aaron Rodgers might not be playing for the Green Bay Packers beyond the 2021 season. However, one future job option appears to be off the table.

According to reports, Jeopardy! has zeroed in on its next full-time host: Mike Richards.

Variety reported on Wednesday night that the popular game show is in advanced negotiations to make Richards, an executive producer of the show, the full-time replacement for Alex Trebek.

This is of note for the NFL world because Rodgers had expressed interest in the full-time gig. He was a guest host for the show earlier this year. Rodgers believed he could theoretically serve as the show’s full-time host and remain in the NFL.

“Hell yeah, I would,” Rodgers told USA TODAY regarding whether or not he’d accept the gig if offered. “Look, it’s my second-brain job. I love the show and have a deep, deep affection for it. Not only is it a nostalgic connection to my childhood, but it’s a really special show to me and I had a great time with everybody that works there.”

It doesn’t look like that will be happening, though. Packers fans have one less thing to worry about when it comes to Rodgers’ future.

Some fans of the show are upset by the news.

“Aaron Rodgers was also a fan favorite for the hosting spot on Jeopardy…and they just decided to (potentially) give it to a guy who has been working there less than a year?!” one fan wrote.

I am 72 and probably watched more Jeopardy than Richards has years. My goodness Aaron Rodgers was much better than Richards,” another fan added.

Richards had extreme praise for Rodgers following his guest hosting gig.

“What I find fascinating about Aaron is his second career could be better than his first,” Richards told NBC Sports.

Rodgers, meanwhile, is currently preparing for the 2021 regular season. He finally reported to Green Bay for training camp last month.

“It’s the best feeling,” Rodgers told NFL Network. “It was a little strange, I think, Day 1 just because I was gone for the entire offseason and contemplated my own future and the possibility of playing somewhere else as well. But when I’m back here, I’m 100 percent all in.

“You know me, you know what I’m all about. I love my teammates. I love competing. I do love practice. I love to go out and give it to the young corner when I can, get after these guys, talk a little smack, especially with a new D-coordinator in here, we’ve got to let him know how it goes around here. It’s good to be back.”

Rodgers is sure to comment on Jeopardy!‘s host decision moving forward, too.
