Ben Roethlisberger ultimately spent his NFL career with just the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, there was reportedly a trade in place to send him to the NFC back in 2009.

Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary told Dan Pompei of The Athletic that a deal was in place to send Roethlisberger to the Bay Area. The reason it didn’t happen is because Singletary vetoed the trade.

Singletary reportedly declined this trade because it was shortly after Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Lake Tahoe.

“I had been telling the team I wanted a team of character,” Singletary told Pompei, via The Athletic. “I felt I had to be true to that. But if I could do it again, I’d do it differently.”

The reactions to this admission are mixed. Some fans are commending Singletary for staying true to his beliefs, while others believe he should’ve pulled the trigger on this trade.

Roethlisberger most likely would’ve fixed the 49ers’ quarterback problem considering the team was trying to figure out who should start between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith.

Pittsburgh found a way to get through this rough patch with Roethlisberger and get back on the same page.

With his NFL career now in the rearview mirror, Roethlisberger will go down as the most prolific passer to ever play for the Steelers.
