NFL World Reacts To The Austin, Texas Speculation
Austin, Texas remains among the largest cities in the United States without an NFL team. But there’s a chance that could change as one team struggles to get a new stadium constructed.
The Buffalo Bills are trying to get $1.5 billion from the state of New York to build a new stadium. But the state has balked at the request, and a report from Seth Wickersham indicates that the Bills are contemplating a move to Austin instead.
Buffalo have called Highmark Stadium (formerly Ralph Wilson Stadium) in Orchard Park their home since 1973. It is the fourth-oldest NFL stadium in the country but 10th in terms of capacity.
NFL fans appear to be mixed on this possibility. Most seem to believe that adding a third NFL team to Texas on top of the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans will be a hard sell, while others are intrigued by the idea:
As much as I would love an NFL team in Austin (where I live), two is plenty for number of teams in the state. https://t.co/RJyfvwp5tJ

Total longshot, but I'd be absolutely stoked to have an NFL team in Austin https://t.co/m0yBfcpuDC

The city of Austin has never had an NFL team, and didn’t even have a professional sports team until Austin FC joined Major League Soccer this year. And with a metro population of over two million residents, the city would likely have no problem filling the stadium.
The Texas Longhorns are the true kings of the city of Austin. Their football stadium is packed to the brim every Saturday.
But Austin FC is proof that the city is willing to bring professional sports into the fold.
An Austin NFL team seems like a longshot – even with this recent drama with the Bills – but it no longer feels as impossible as it was a few years ago.
