Throughout the ongoing spat between Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, reports have indicated time and time again that the conflict hasn’t been about money. However, a new piece of information suggests that might not entirely be the case.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a team that’s expressed interest in Rodgers believes the 2020 MVP wants to be paid $90 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons. That amount would match the per year salary of Patrick Mahomes, which has become the benchmark for the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Here’s more from Florio:

“Per a league source, it’s believed by at least one team that has (or had) interest in Rodgers that he wants $90 million guaranteed over two years,” Florio wrote. “That would get him to the Patricks Mahomes $45 million high-water mark. With the $45 million average applying to only the first two years and with all of it guaranteed, the structure necessary to pay that kind of money would as a practical matter tie Green Bay’s hands through 2022 and potentially into 2023.”

“Although some have said it’s not about the money, the money becomes a way to fix a problem that former teammates continue to call fixable. By giving Rodgers the kind of contract that gives the Packers no choice but to (1) keep Rodgers, and (2) keep Jordan Love on the bench, the team necessarily resets the clock to pre-2020 draft, before the moment that the team clumsily traded up to get Love without telling first Rodgers. (Telling him first probably wouldn’t have made it much better.)”

Sunday’s report stirred up more confusion about Rodgers’ future in Green Bay as many have started to wonder if the Packers will be willing to pony up that kind of money. Others wondered if the 37-year-old’s reported demand would open up the possibility of him playing elsewhere next year.

The Packers reportedly offered Rodgers a two-year extension this offseason, which would’ve kept him in Green Bay for the next five years and made him the highest-paid quarterback in football. However, he turned that down, casting further confusion on what he wants.

A major milestone in the Rodgers offseason saga will come later this week when the Packers begin training camp. The quarterback’s status for the event remains unknown, but the NFL world will have an answer on his availability soon enough.
