NFL power rankings Week 9: Are the Philadelphia Eagles the team to beat?

The Philadelphia Eagles went 14-3 last season and made it to the Super Bowl, where they were edged by the Kansas City Chiefs, 38-35, in a devastating loss.

But there has been no Super Bowl hangover for the Phillies in 2023.

Philadelphia has rebounded from that agonizing defeat in the final game of last season to jump out to a 7-1 start on the season.

The team's lone loss this season was a 20-14 setback at the New York Jets in NFL Week 6.

It has wins over the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Commanders (twice), Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins this season.

That's good enough to put that at the No. 1 spot in these NFL power rankings entering NFL Week 9.

How long can they stay there?

Jalen Hurts and company have an absolute gauntlet of a schedule coming up, with the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys again, and Seattle Seahawks in their next six games.

But for now, the Eagles look like the team to beat in the quest to win the Super Bowl this season.

Check out how we rank all 32 teams in the NFL heading into NFL Week 9 games, with previous ranking in parenthesis.

32. Arizona Cardinals (31)

Lost to Ravens, 31-24, to fall to 1-7. If the NFL draft were to be held today, the Cardinals would have the No. 1 pick. What would they do with it?

The Arizona Cardinals have lost an NFL-worst five straight games with the latest coming in a 31-24 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in NFL Week 8.
The Arizona Cardinals have lost an NFL-worst five straight games with the latest coming in a 31-24 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in NFL Week 8.

31. Carolina Panthers (32)

Beat Texans, 15-13, to improve to 1-6. This Panthers team has issues, but a win is a win, and they get a bump for beating the Texans.

30. Chicago Bears (30)

Lost to Chargers, 30-13, to fall to 2-6. The Bears are 1-3 at home and 1-3 on the road. Hey, they are consistent.

29. New England Patriots (28)

Lost to Dolphins, 31-17, to fall to 2-6. New England has only scored 118 points this season, but we're more surprised by the 208 points Bill Belichick's defense has given up.

28. New York Giants (27)

Lost to Jets, 13-10, to fall to 2-6. How bad have the Giants been? They only have 95 points this season in eight games. The Steelers have 113 in seven games played.

27. Green Bay Packers (25)

Lost to Vikings, 24-10, to fall to 2-5. The Packers have a four-game losing streak, the second longest in the NFL (Cardinals have lost five in a row).

26. Denver Broncos (29)

Beat Chiefs, 24-9, to improve to 3-5. We did not see that win over the Chiefs coming. The Broncos have won two in a row. Did we write them off too early?

25. Indianapolis Colts (22)

Lost to Saints, 38-27, to fall to 3-5. Home field disadvantage? The Colts are 1-4 at Lucas Oil Stadium and 2-1 on the road.

24. Las Vegas Raiders (23)

Enter NFL Week 8 Monday Night Football game vs. Lions with 3-4 record.

23. Tennessee Titans (26)

Beat Falcons, 28-23, to improve to 3-4. Is Will Levis the answer for the Titans at QB? It certainly doesn't hurt to see what the rookie can do.

22. Houston Texans (19)

Lost to Panthers, 15-13, to fall to 3-4. We've got to drop the Texans after falling to the previously winless Panthers, even if Houston is much improved.

21. Los Angeles Rams (18)

Lost to Cowboys, 43-20, to fall to 3-5. In our opinion, a team with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua is capable of putting up more points than Los Angeles has in the past couple of weeks.

20. Washington Commanders (17)

Lost to Eagles, 38-31, to fall to 3-5. This team has played the Eagles tough twice, but losses still go down as losses in the NFL.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (15)

Lost to Bills, 24-18, to fall to 3-4. At one point, this team seemed in control of the NFC South. Things change with three straight losses.

18. Los Angeles Chargers (24)

Beat Bears, 30-13, to improve to 3-4. Is this team a contender? We'll find out in the next two weeks against the Jets and Lions.

17. Atlanta Falcons (14)

Lost to Titans, 28-23, to fall to 4-4. The Falcons have been outscored 138-161 on the season, yet are tied for the lead in the NFC South.

16. Minnesota Vikings (21)

Beat Packers, 24-10, to improve to 4-4. Where does the team go without Kirk Cousins? Probably not up in the standings.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers (8)

Lost to Jaguars, 20-10, to fall to 4-3. The defense is not the problem in Pittsburgh, having allowed just 147 points. The offense has only scored 113.

14. Cleveland Browns (12)

Lost to Seahawks, 24-20, to fall to 4-3. A late interception allowed the Seahawks to rally to beat the Browns late. Cleveland fans aren't happy with the play calling.

13. New Orleans Saints (20)

Beat Colts, 38-27, to improve to 4-4. The Saints leading rusher on Sunday? "Tight end" Taysom Hill rushed nine times for 63 yards and two touchdowns.

12. New York Jets (13)

Beat Giants, 13-10, to improve to 4-3. We're still not sure how the Jets pulled that off against the Giants, but this team has now won three straight.

11. Cincinnati Bengals (16)

Beat 49ers, 31-17, to improve to 4-3. How touch is the AFC North? The Bengals, winners of three straight, are tied with the Browns and Steelers at 4-3, with the Ravens at 6-2.

10. San Francisco 49ers (3)

Lost to Bengals, 31-17, to fall to 5-3. We thought this team was the best team in the NFL a few weeks ago. Three straight losses have definitely changed that.

9. Buffalo Bills (11)

Beat Buccaneers, 24-18, to improve to 5-3. Even with its struggles, the Bills' offense is still among the NFL's best, as only one AFC team has scored more points this season.

8. Kansas City Chiefs (1)

Lost to Broncos, 24-9, to fall to 6-2. Yes, that's a steep drop, but the No. 1-ranked team in the NFL doesn't lose to the Broncos by 15.

7. Detroit Lions (10)

Enter NFL Week 8 Monday Night Football game vs. Raiders with 5-2 record.

6. Baltimore Ravens (9)

Beat Cardinals, 31-24, to improve to 6-2. This Baltimore team has won three straight and appears to be clicking on all cylinders.

5. Dallas Cowboys (7)

Beat Rams, 43-20, to improve to 5-2. A win for Dallas at Philadelphia this week would vault the Cowboys up these rankings.

4. Seattle Seahawks (6)

Beat Browns, 24-20, to improve to 5-2. Two straight wins (and three straight 49ers losses) have lifted Seattle to the top of the NFC West.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars (5)

Beat Steelers, 20-10, to improve to 6-2. The Jaguars are 4-0 on the road, the NFL's only team to not have a loss away from home.

2. Miami Dolphins (4)

Beat Patriots, 31-17, to improve to 6-2. The Dolphins have scored an NFL-best 271 points this season. The Eagles are second with 224.

1. Philadelphia Eagles (2)

Beat Commanders, 38-31, to improve to 7-1. The Eagles are 3-0 at home. They host the Cowboys, Bills and 49ers ion three of their next four games.
