Some members of the Detroit Lions stayed at the facility on Friday night after practice was over to support backup quarterback David Blough. He was anxiously waiting to watch his wife, Melissa Gonzalez, compete in a qualifier for the Olympic semifinal round of the 400-meter hurdles.

Gonzalez didn’t disappoint in the qualifying round, as she punched her ticket to the semifinals. She ran a 55.32 in the 400-meter hurdles, which is a Colombian national record.

As if Gonzalez qualifying for the semifinals wasn’t awesome enough, the Lions released a video from their watch party on Friday night.

Toward the end of the race, Blough got out of his seat and was cheering Gonzalez on. It was a wholesome moment for Blough, Gonzalez and the Lions.

This was a great birthday present for Blough, who just turned 26 years old on Saturday.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the team’s watch party during a press conference this weekend. Seeing his players bond over Gonzalez’s race put a smile on his face.

“You don’t always get these type of experiences, but to me that embodies enjoying the ride because that was pretty cool,” Campbell said. “It was a moment, I can tell you that.”

The semifinals for the 400-meter hurdles will take place on Monday. We’d imagine Detroit will host another watch party to cheer Gonzalez on.
