NFL Insider Has Update On Cam Newton’s Hand Injury
Cam Newton is expected to start for a second season with the New England Patriots, after a pretty disappointing 2020. The situation is more precarious this year though, after the team drafted Alabama’s Mac Jones with its first round pick.
Jones is expected to be the long term answer at starting quarterback down the line. It makes sense that Bill Belichick will go with the veteran player who knows the system in Newton to start, but if he plays the way he did late last season, that change could come sooner than later.
Newton also needs to stay healthy, which has been a struggle at times throughout his career. He had a setback during OTAs on Friday, injuring his hand during a drill. Luckily, it doesn’t sound like a major issue, but he may be done for the next few weeks out of precaution.
“Cam Newton suffered a slight bone bruise today at practice,” Ian Rapoport reported on Friday night. “Not considered major at all, but since it’s the Spring, we may not see much more of him until training camp.”

That would seem to open up the possibility of Mac Jones seizing some momentum with the first team. Instead, according to those at practice, Jarrett Stidham was the main benefactor.
“Every throw Stidham delivered during seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 passing periods found its target, including the one Jakob Johnson dropped,” Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald wrote, calling it a perfect day for the former Auburn QB.
Jones was 8-for-11 in the same period. We may have a bit of a battle for the QB2 spot this year, though the New England Patriots have far more invested in Jones than Stidham at this point.
