The nominations for Caller-Times Student of the Week are in and it's time to cast a vote.

Voting is open until noon Thursday.

Participating Coastal Bend high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated high school students they say have shown outstanding academic and school achievement.

We will announce a winner and runner-up Friday.

To cast a vote, visit the poll at the bottom of this nominees list.

The nominees are:

  • Rufino Medado is a senior at Gregory-Portland High School. Medado works extremely hard inside and outside of the classroom to excel. Medado was accepted as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States. He was the only tuba player chosen in the country. He will perform this summer at Carnegie Hall in New York and in South America. Medado is involved in band, e-sports club and Young Life and is a two-time all-state tuba player.

  • Riley Unterbrink is a senior at Calallen High School. Unterbrink is currently ranked ninth in the graduating class of 2024. He is a member of the varsity football and track team.  Riley is a member of the National Honor Society, Interact and River Hills 4H Clubs.  He has participated in the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show for many years where he won grand champion pen of broilers for the 2022 and 2023 shows. Riley plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station and major in poultry science.

  • Joshua Davis is a sophomore at Flour Bluff High School. Davis distinguishes himself both in and out of the classroom with his profound interest in computer graphics and editing, according to his nomination from Flour Bluff ISD. "Josh is awesome because he goes out of his way to check in with people and see how they are doing," said teacher Lauren Gow, highlighting his exceptional character and altruism. "He is always open to helping others. For example, he helped a fellow classmate carry her large project from the front desk to its destination, no questions asked. I try to live by Josh's lifestyle of being respectful, caring, and open to learn from anyone."
