Zoe Kravitz is 'grateful' her upcoming directorial debut brought Channing Tatum into her life

Zoë Kravitz says knew that she wanted her now-boyfriend Channing Tatum to star in her upcoming directorial debut, "P***y Island," even before she met him.

In the upcoming thriller, Tatum will play a tech mogul who invites a cocktail waitress (Naomi Ackie) to his private island, where she soon finds that "there's more to this island than meets the eye."

In a recent interview with WSJ Magazine, Kravitz explained that the script for the film, "was born out of a lot of anger and frustration around the lack of conversation about the treatment of women, specifically in industries that have a lot of money in them, like Hollywood, the tech world, all of that."

She told the magazine that while casting the tech director role in the film, she "wanted to find someone who hadn't played a dark character before" because she feels it's "exciting to watch someone who's mostly played boy next door, good guy, love interest, all of that."

"I felt, even from afar, before I knew him, that he was a feminist and that he wasn't afraid of exploring that darkness, because he knows he's not that," she continued, referring to Tatum. "That's why I was drawn to him and why I wanted to meet with him."

Tatum, whose company Free Association is co-producing the project, appreciated that Kravitz cast against type and went for him. "I didn't know Zoë before I met her for the film," he told the outlet. "It's always really intriguing to have someone bring you something that literally no one else has ever thought of you for."

The pair developed a working relationship because of the film, but ended up in a romantic one as well.

"When you make things with people it's a very sacred space, and when you're compatible with somebody creatively it often opens up other channels, because you're kind of sharing all of yourself," Kravitz said.

"I'm really grateful that this movie brought him into my life that way," she added.

"P***y Island" is expected to be released in 2023.
