Zach Wilson Names ‘Critical’ Step For Jets’ Offense

The New York Jets are hoping to turn over a whole new leaf in 2021. The team hired a new head coach in Robert Saleh, and used the No. 2 overall pick on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.

Right now, largely untested quarterbacks James Morgan and Mike White are on the roster. This is pretty clearly Wilson’s job from Day 1, if he can lock it down. He admits that there is still plenty of work to do to get to the place where he’s ready to lead the offense.

Over the next six weeks before training camp, Wilson hopes to get with his wide receivers to continue to develop chemistry. He thinks that will be “critical” for him to get ready in time for the season.

“I think that’s critical in understanding how an offense flows together,” Wilson said, per the Jets website. “Not only are we out here looking at different coverages and trying to get our footwork and routes, timing, progression locked up, but now you’ve got to make the throw. These are all guys that we haven’t had a lot of experience throwing to.”

“I think that’s needed, to be able to talk through routes, what they’re thinking, what things they’re going to do against certain coverages, where they’re going to step things off at. You get a feel for how they are as route runners. So I think that’s pretty critical and we’ll make sure we find some time to get together.”

Ole Miss product Elijah Moore has made a quick impression in Jets camp. Those two could be a rookie QB-to-WR connection to watch in 2021.

With Corey Davis, Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims, and Keelan Cole, the New York Jets have a pretty intriguing group of receivers for Zach Wilson to throw to this fall.
