Yelp says this Wichita restaurant has state’s best sandwiches. I’ve filled in the blanks.
Yelp last week published a list titled “Best Sandwiches in Every State.”
But the headline was a tad misleading, in my opinion. Instead of naming one sandwich from each state that’s the best, the list names one restaurant per state that makes great sandwiches.
I’m here to help.
According to Yelp, Tanya’s Soup Kitchen at 1725 E. Douglas in Wichita is the best place in Kansas to get sandwiches. It reached its conclusions, the article said, by identifying businesses in the site’s “sandwiches” category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning “sandwiches.” It then ranked those spots using factors such as geographic location, volume and ratings of the reviews mentioning the word “sandwiches.”
But which sandwiches at Tanya’s are the best sandwiches at Tanya’s?
I’ve been eating Tanya’s Soup Kitchen sandwiches ever since 1997, the year that Tanya Tandoc first opened her restaurant at 725 E. Douglas (where The Kitchen is now) within view of the old Wichita Eagle building. And I’ve had the same favorite since my very first visit.
It’s the Milano, which features roast beef, shredded Parmesan, basil mayo and romaine lettuce served on a soft Ciabatta bun. There’s just something about the way the salty cheese gets mixed up with the basil mayo that creates a texture that’s hard to explain. I can taste it now, even as I type this.
I’ve also enjoyed, on the few occasions I’ve strayed from the Milano, the Chef’s Club, which comes on golden toast that isn’t too crunchy and is stuffed with smoked turkey, avocado, bacon, lettuce and tomato and topped with Gorgonzola dressing.
And although they’re not in my regular rotation, I do love that two of the sandwiches at Tanya’s — the Olive (which has no olives) and the Lulu — are named after two adorable pugs that Tandoc owned before her tragic death nine years ago.
(My editor, by the way, insists that the Caprese BLT is the best sandwich at Tanya’s, but it’s a seasonal special and won’t be on the menu much longer this year.)
Even though Tandoc has been gone since 2015, her restaurant lives on at under the passionate ownership of her friend and former employee Kelly Rae Leffel, and the sandwiches are as good as they ever were.
