WRAL anchor announces departure from the station

WRAL and Fox 50 anchor Mikaya Thurmond is leaving the station.

She made the announcement on her social media accounts Monday morning, but did not say what she plans to do next.

Her last day at the station is Aug. 12.

The Atlanta native came to WRAL in 2015 from WTVC in Chattanooga. She worked first as a reporter and then was promoted to weekend morning reporter and anchor in 2018. In 2020, she became the weekday morning anchor for WRAL’s sister station, Fox 50. Both stations are owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company.

In 2019, Thurmond took a medical leave of absence for several weeks to have surgery and recuperate with family in Georgia.

Thurmond’s message about her departure from WRAL, shared on social media, read:

“PERSONAL NEWS After 7 amazing years at WRAL, I will be leaving on August 12th. I’ll share what’s next very soon! For now, I simply want to say thank you to WRAL, my amazing work family and YOU.

When I started, I was the youngest reporter. I NEVER dreamed that WRAL would promote me to the weekend anchor desk and again to weekday morning anchor. This climb was beyond my wildest dreams!”
