Lenny Kravitz explains why he works out in full rockstar attire

Musician Lenny Kravitz has never shied away from making a statement with his apparel, even while at the gym.

On April 9, the rock star went viral after posting a video of himself doing an intense workout while clad in leather pants, a sheer shirt, boots and sunglasses.

“Thank God for today!” he captioned his post. “Grateful. Never been better. There are no shortcuts so seize your day. It is all possible. Love!”

Weeks after the video, Kravitz explained why he works out in full rockstar attire — and the one exception.

“I’m always working out in leather pants or jeans and boots and whatever — if I’m not doing cardio,” Kravitz told Variety. “If I’m doing cardio, obviously I’m going to wear sweats because I’m going to be sweating all over the place. But if I’m lifting weights, I don’t sweat so much.”

The singer continued. “So, a lot of times I’m coming from somewhere or I’m going somewhere. And I just don’t care. I’m gonna pop in, I’ve got 45 minutes, we’re gonna hit it and I’m gonna go run to where I’m going.”

Kravitz said she doesn’t “do it for effect.” “I didn’t do that to be like, ‘Oh, let me be just so different and wear leather pants and glasses.’ No, it’s just me walking in off the street,” he added.

A representative for Equinox tells TODAY.com that Kravitz’s viral workout video was taken at the gym’s Hudson Yards location in New York City.

TODAY.com can confirm that Kravitz often wears his full rockstar regalia to exercise, as this reporter has previously spotted him working out in similar attire.

In the comments of his original post, Kravitz’s fans were having a field day with his workout look and general fitness.

“Reasons why I haven’t started working out: 1. I don’t own any leather pants. Yea that’s it,” the top comment from @andy._.social reads.

Fellow celebrities also got in on the action.

“Damn bro i need better gym fits,” fellow musician Whiz Kalifa replied.

Comedian Arsenio Hall quipped, “this post makes my back hurt!”

“Man! Boots and leather pants while working out is crazy!” DJ/producer D-Nice replied. “Always on brand!”

What does Lenny Kravitz do to work out?

In a 2020 cover interview with Men's Health, Kravitz opened up about how he was working out in the Bahamas amid the pandemic. He said he was doing an at-home variation of his longtime training routine that has been a staple since the late 1990s when he began working with trainer Dodd Romero in Miami.

He said his workout regimen usually mixes fasted cardio sessions in the mornings, weightlifting during the day, and more cardio just before bed.

In the Variety interview, Kravitz was about fitness experts criticizing the moves he does in his viral video.

“I know what I’m doing. And my trainer knows what he’s doing. And I know my body and what my body does and what it can do and how it feels and it’s all good.” he told the magazine. “I trained with elite athletes, I trained with football players, NFL and NBA stars. I trained with MLB stars, wrestlers, boxers. I’ve played with them all. I won’t mention names, but they’re all people you would know. And they’ll tell you I train very seriously.”

He recalled his tour bus pulling up to the gym after getting off a leg of a tour and meeting up with Romero — “who is the guy in the video who I’ve been working with for 25-plus years.”

“And these big athletes saw me walking in and my trainer said ‘He’s gonna work out with us.’ And they all started laughing. Because I was wearing jeans and a belt and boots and whatever shirt I was wearing, and they were like, ‘We’re gonna work out with this little rock star dude?’ Like they were making fun of me,” he continued. “And I destroyed them. And they didn’t see it coming.”

Kravitz is no stranger to making headlines for his fitness and style.
