VIDEO: Seattle woman shot twice while child slept next to her in bed, police say
SEATTLE - A woman was shot in the legs while sleeping with her child, who was unharmed, during an early morning shooting in West Seattle.
At around 2:42 a.m., police officers responded to reports of violence at an apartment near the corner of SW Cambridge St. and 27th Ave. SW. This area is just a block east of Roxhill Park in Seattle’s Delridge neighborhood.
Authorities said the victim was asleep alongside her young child when a series of gunshots originating from a nearby courtyard struck their bedroom wall. The toddler was reportedly unharmed in the incident.
FOX 13 crews at the scene captured video showing numerous bullet holes in the side of an apartment building.
One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, told FOX 13 Seattle that he heard what he thought were at least 20 shots fired.
"I was asleep. It was around 2:00 am and I just heard multiple rounds of gunshots. I just thought I was dreaming in the moment and I kind of waited for the sirens to come and fell back asleep," a neighbor said. "I feel sad because this neighborhood is very safe, so not sure what happened. Hopefully, she’s doing OK."
Video obtained by FOX 13 backs up that claim. In it, you can see three suspects spraying bullets into the home in a matter of seconds.
Investigators at the scene estimate that between 48 and 60 shots were fired. Detectives left the scene at around 5 a.m. carrying bags full of spent shell casings collected near the courtyard between two apartment buildings.
Authorities have not yet provided any descriptions of the suspects, who are currently at large, or the car that left the scene.
"It’s very dangerous and I don’t think we don’t have enough police force and it’s scary to even go out of the car even around this time of night," said Maria, another local resident concerned about crime.
Detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit were called to take the lead in the ongoing investigation.
