Wildfire erupts Saturday on Goat Mountain near Bass Lake, drawing fast Cal Fire response

A wildfire started on Goat Mountain, between Bass Lake and Oakhurst, before being quickly contained Saturday morning by Cal Fire.

The fire, reported about 8:35 a.m., was burning in the Sierra National Forest near the community of Wishon. It’s not clear what started it.

It burned about three-quarters of an acre in an area with lots of dead trees, said public information officer Jaime Williams of Cal Fire Merced-Mariposa-Madera counties.

“That area has a lot of really heavy brush,” she said. “There’s a lot of dead fuel on the ground.”

It was reported 100% contained at 10:45 a.m.

“They got on it pretty quick,” she said.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the air with planes and helicopters and with crews and engines on the ground.

It’s been dubbed the Goat Fire.

No evacuation orders or advisories were issued as the fire was deep within the forest.

“Firefighters still remain at scene,” Williams said. “There’s quite a bit of heavy mop up. They’ll continue to be out there as long as it takes.”

Earlier Shaver Lake area fire at 5 acres

It is a separate incident from the Nutmeg Fire, which broke out Friday night in Blue Canyon, southeast of Shaver Lake.

That fire burned about five acres before being contained.

Firefighters were still busy with some active fire there Saturday morning, said Cal Fire spokesman John Dominguez.

Crews will be there for several days given the vegetation and forest in the area, he said.
