Well-traveled former KU wing Svi Mykhailiuk agrees to 4-year deal with NBA’s Utah Jazz
Former University of Kansas basketball wing Svi Mykhailiuk, 27, is about to play for his eighth NBA team.
The 6-foot-7, 205-pound native of Cherkasy, Ukraine — he played at KU from 2014-15 to 2017-18 and most recently was a member of the 2024 Boston Celtics NBA title team — on Friday agreed to a four-year, $15 million deal with the Utah Jazz, Michael Lelchitski of Sports International Group told ESPN.com.
The first year of Mykhailiuk’s contract is fully guaranteed at $3.5 million, The Athletic reported. The next three are non-guaranteed.
Mykhailiuk was a second-round selection, the 47th overall pick, in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Before joining the Celtics in free-agency prior to the 2023-24 season, Mykhailiuk played for the LA Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets.
Mykhailiuk last season made $2.4 million with Boston on a one-year deal.
He played in 41 regular-season games and averaged 10.1 minutes and 4.0 points. He appeared in eight playoff games in 2024, including three in the finals against Dallas.
Mykhailiuk last appeared in more than 50 NBA games in a season in 2021 with the Raptors. He averaged 5.0 points in 13 minutes per game.
Mykhailiuk joins a Utah team in the midst of a rebuilding process. Earlier in the week the Jazz extended the contract of forward Lauri Markkanen, the son of former KU forward Pekka Markkanen. It’s believed minutes are available for Mykhailiuk in the Jazz regular rotation.
“Now that the Jazz have the Lauri Markkanen extension in the rearview mirror, the team is set to make a number of signings official,” wrote Sarah Todd of Deseret News. “After the team signs Mykhailiuk, Drew Eubanks, Johnny Juzang and rookie Kyle Filipowski the Jazz will have filled 14 of 15 standard roster spots. Traditionally the team prefers to leave the final roster spot open as it goes through training camp heading into a new season.”
Mykhailiuk played four seasons at KU and was a two-year starter. He was an all-Big 12 second-team selection in 2018. He broke the Kansas single-season record for 3-point field goals made with 115 in 2017-18.
Mykhailiuk was also a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and was second on the KU team with a 14.6 scoring average his senior season. Mykhailiuk currently ranks No. 5 on the Kansas 3-point field goals made list at 237, No. 6 on the 3-point field goals attempted list at 579 and No. 43 in scoring with 1,181 points.
He is the second basketball player from Ukraine and 16th from KU to win an NBA title. Slava Medvedenko of Ukraine won NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and 2002.
Mykhailiuk is the eighth Jayhawk to play for head coach Bill Self and then win an NBA title. He joins Wayne Simien (2006, Miami), Mario Chalmers (2012, 2013, Miami), Brandon Rush (2015, Golden State), Sasha Kaun (2016, Cleveland), Markieff Morris (2020, Lakers), Andrew Wiggins (2022, Golden State) and Christian Braun (2023, Denver).
