Walking in a winter wonderland: Ice Castles New Hampshire opens for two month season

Looking for an otherwordly winter adventure within driving distance?

The popular Ice Castles attraction in New Hampshire opens for the season Friday, Jan. 14.

The park has a myriad of frozen structures for visitors to explore. In addition to massive walls of ice creating a maze-like walking path, in years past there have been caves, an ice throne, a slide and even evidence of a yeti's exit through solid ice.

Much of the structure is made by a system of bubbling fountains which creates a final effect reminiscent of a cave-like great, frozen stalagmites above ground. During the evenings, the ice is lit with multi-colored lights.

It is helpful to dress warmly, wear non-slip footwear, and consider wearing water proof pants as a visitor could find themselves crawling or sitting on wet ice. The park is an open-air outdoor facility.

Visitors are encouraged to wear masks, but proof of COVID-19 vaccination will not be requested. The organization asks people feeling unwell on the day of their visit to stay home and exchange their ticket for another time.

Tickets are on sale now, and usually the weekend time slots go fast. For Fridays and Saturdays general admission tickets are $27 or $22 for children 4 to 11 years of age. Monday through Thursday prices are $20 per person for general admission and $15 for a child.
