Unique Sacramento events this weekend: Backstreet Boys, Republic FC match, Monster Jam

It’s the last full month of summer, Sacramento.

But there are still a few weeks left to pack in some summer activities.

Temperatures in Sacramento are expected to cool off slightly this weekend, with highs around the mid 90s starting Friday, according to the National Weather Service — a reprieve from the triple-digit heat.

As Sacramentans head into the final stretch of the season, consider heading out to one of these events this weekend of Aug. 5-7:

Friday

View paintings from a Sacramento artist

216 O St., Sacramento

The Wayne Thiebaud exhibition is coming to a close at the Crocker Art Museum Aug. 7. The Sacramento artist, who passed away last year, was most known for his pop-art style paintings of cakes, pies and other confections, according to Crocker.

Admission to the museum is $15 for non-member adults and $8 for children between 6 and 17 years old. Children under 5 are admitted for free. You can check availability for and reserve tickets online.

Head bang at a heavy metal show

417 R. St, Sacramento

Metalcore band August Burns Red is performing at Ace of Spades for its “Through the Thorns” tour. The concert, which begins at 6 p.m., also features other metal bands: We are Romans, Hollow Front and Void of Vision.

Shop for jewelry at a gem show

6151 H St., Sacramento

Gem Faire, one of the largest jewelry and bead shows in the country, is coming to Sacramento this weekend at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, starting at noon Friday. The fair shows along the West Coast and features a collection of semi-precious gemstones, crystals as well as displays from the Sacramento Mineral Society.

Admission to the fair is $7, and parking is free. The fair is a three-day event that ends at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday.

Support your local soccer team

1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento

Sacramento Republic FC is going head to head with Rio Grande FC this weekend at Heart Health Park. Sacramento’s professional soccer team recently defeated Sporting Kansas City, emerging as U.S. Open Cup finalists.

The match starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available online starting at $15.

Go back in time with a 90s band

2677 Forty Mile Rd., Wheatland

The Backstreet Boys are making a stop in Northern California at the Toyota Amphitheater in Wheatland for their “DNA World Tour” show. The dance-pop group, formed in 1993, is known for hits like “Everybody” and “I Want It That Way.” The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are still available on LiveNation starting at $35.

Sunday

Watch monster trucks compete for victory

500 David J Stern Walk, Sacramento

Monster Jam truck enthusiasts can watch trucks go head to head in a competition at the Golden 1 Center Sunday. The event begins at 1 p.m. and people of all ages are welcome.

Tickets are available online starting at $20.

Catch a stop-motion film at the Crest

1013 K St., Sacramento

Sacramento’s historic Crest Theatre is screening the animated, stop-motion movie “Boxtrolls” this Sunday at 3 p.m. The film centers around an orphaned boy raised by trash collectors. Tickets are $10 per person, and the matinee is open to people of all ages.
