Two killed, three more injured in multi-vehicle crash, SC Highway Patrol says

Two people were killed and three more were injured in a multi-vehicle crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The three-vehicle collision happened Monday at about 6:30 a.m. in Berkeley County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2019 Dodge sedan was driving north on Black Tom Road when it crashed into a 2019 Dodge SUV before hitting a 2017 Nissan pickup truck, according to Pye. The wreck was near the intersection with Black Tom Extension in Moncks Corner.

The drivers of the car and the SUV were killed, Pye said.

Both 52-year-old Farid K. Karriem and 40-year-old Charles E. Robish died at the scene, according to Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell. Both men were Moncks Corners residents, Hartwell said.

A passenger in the SUV in addition to the driver and passenger in the pickup were injured and taken to an area hospital, according to Pye. Further information on their conditions was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the car to hit the other vehicles was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 125 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,081 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 18 people have died in Berkeley County crashes in 2023, according to the coroner’s office. Last year, 49 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
