Three of the top pizza restaurants in the world are in California, according to 50 Top Pizza’s annual “Guide to the best pizzerias in the world.”

Judges from 50 Top Pizza visited pizzerias around the world then ranked and reviewed them for a free online guidebook.

Two restaurants in San Francisco and one in Los Angeles made the list of highly esteemed pizza spots.

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana — San Francisco

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana ranked No. 10 on the list of 100 restaurants.

His traditional pizzeria was recognized for his pan and Roman-style pizzas.

Roman-style pizza, unlike Neapolitan, can have any kind of sauce, including pesto, red and white sauces. The crust is also light and crispier, and scissors are used to cut it.

“Tony Gemignani takes care of the leavening and chooses only artisan products for the toppings,” judges wrote.

Additionally, Gemignani has seven different pizza ovens to serve many types of pizzas, including Neapolitan, classic American and Italian, Sicilian, gluten free and New York-, Detroit-, St. Louis- and Roman-style pizza.

Pizzana — Los Angeles

Chef Daniele Uditi’s Pizzana ranked No. 37.

Judges recognized his Neapolitan-style pizza made with mozzarella, basil and San Marzano tomatoes imported from Campania.

“The dough melts in your mouth but it also has the perfect crunchy bite to the crust,” judges wrote in the guide.

He uses his signature “slow dough” for the pizza, which includes organic stone ground flour that is fermented for 48 hours.

Uditi has three locations in California: Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Sherman Oaks. A Dallas, Texas, location is in the works.

Uditi will also be a head judge in Hulu’s new show “Best in Dough.” It premiered Sept. 19

Doppio Zero — San Francisco

Doppio Zero is well-known for its Neapolitan-style pizza in the Bay Area — and now the pizzeria has been recognized by 50 Top Pizza.

The restaurant, which ranked at No. 89, was highlighted for this pizza by judges, including its calzone.

“A real embassy of Italian cuisine, not only for the pizza but also for the kitchen, which offers traditional recipes as well as some classic homemade pasta,” according to the guide.

Chef Antonio Greco’s Doppio Zero has two other locations, one in Mountain View and another in Concord.
