Texas A&M receiver Ainias Smith arrested on DWI and weapons charges

One day before Ainias Smith was scheduled to appear at SEC media days, Texas A&M’s top returning wide receiver instead finds himself in legal trouble.

Smith, 21, was arrested early Wednesday morning by university police and booked into Brazos County jail on charges of DWI, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon. He posted $8,000 bond and was released later Wednesday, according to jail records. The records did not indicate if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Smith has been suspended from the football team per athletic department policy following his arrest, according to Alan Cannon, a spokesman for Texas A&M. Cannon added that coach Jimbo Fisher was aware of the situation and looking into it.

He was slated to appear Thursday in Atlanta at SEC Media Day with head coach Jimbo Fisher for interviews on Thursday along with defensive back Demani Richardson and offensive lineman Layden Robinson.

Smith led the team last season with 47 receptions for 509 yards and six touchdowns as a junior while serving as a team captain for the Aggies. He was also the team’s leading punt returner in 2021 with 259 total yards and a score on 23 attempts.
