Storms soak Kansas City with 1-3 inches of rain. When will metro get a chance to dry out?

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to bring additional rains Wednesday to an already drenched Kansas City area, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight storms have dumped between 1 and 3 inches of rain in the metro and another 1 to 1.5 inches of rain is possible through Thursday as additional storms move through the area, the weather service said.

The heavier rains have fallen across the southern part of the metro and if storms continue to focus over the same area, minor flooding and river flooding may be possible, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

A flash flood warning has been issued along Interstate 35 in northwestern Coffey County, northwestern Franklin County and Osage County in Kansas.

At 6:24 a.m., radar indicated that thunderstorms were producing heavy rains across the area. Between 3 and 9 inches of rain had fallen and flash flooding was ongoing or was expected to begin, the weather service said.

Drivers were urged to use caution if traveling through the area.

“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the weather service said in the warning. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

The warning is in effect until 10:30 a.m.

In the Kansas City area, rain chances will range from 50 to 80% for most of the day Wednesday.

There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms Wednesday evening across far northwestern Missouri and extreme northeastern Kansas, the weather service said. Large hail will be the primary threat.

Overnight, rain chances increase to 80 to 90%. On Thursday, rain chances will gradually decrease throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 70s on Wednesday and Thursday, which is about 10 degrees above the normal for this time of year in Kansas City.

A brief dry period is expected Thursday evening before a strong cold front pushes through the metro area bringing another round of showers as well as much colder temperatures, the weather service said. Temperatures are expected to tumble into the lower 30s to lower 40s across the Kansas City region.

Temperatures on Saturday are expected to be in the mid-40s. Another round of rain is expected Saturday night and continue into Sunday. Because of the colder temperatures, a little light snow over northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri can’t be ruled out Saturday night, the weather service said.

Temperatures on Sunday are expected to be in the upper 30s in the across the metro area. Rain is likely mainly before 1 p.m.

Very cold weather is expected next week, with the Kansas City area likely seeing its first hard freeze, bringing an end to the growing season. Daytime temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees below normal, which is the low 60s this time of year in Kansas City.
