Stones from Grapevine 9-11 Flight Crew Memorial stolen

GRAPEVINE, Texas - Grapevine police are looking to find the people responsible for stealing items from the city's 9-11 Flight Crew Memorial.

On Monday, police were told that two stones were missing from the memorial site on Texan Trail.

"People don’t realize what’s there. I mean, unless they come here," said Joe Luccioni.

Luccioni, who was on the Board of Directors that created the memorial, visits every week.

His daughter's fiancé died on 9-11.

Now the stones, which were a gift to the city, are missing.

One stone was from the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and another was a piece of limestone from the wreckage at the Pentagon.

"I still can’t believe that it’s missing," Luccioni said. "I was very upset."

Grapevine police says a Parks Department employee visited the memorial on Friday and noticed the stones were missing.

He called police on Monday.

"It’s a despicable crime," said Amanda McNew with Grapevine Police.

The memorial was dedicated in 2008, with the stones secured inside two enclosures.

"They were able to wedge to loosen it from inside and then just get them out," said McNew.

Police didn't find any other vandalism.

Grapevine police say they are reviewing surveillance video from the area and working to determine when the stones were last seen at the memorial.

"It could expand to months, we just don’t know at this point," McNew said.

Grapevine holds an annual 9-11 remembrance ceremony at the flight crew memorial.

The Allied Pilots Association released a statement about the theft to FOX 4:

"The Allied Pilots Association commends the Grapevine Police Department for its efforts to recover the missing stones from the 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial. We urge anyone who has information regarding what happened to the stones to come forward immediately. This memorial honors the pilots, flight attendants, and first responders who died doing their jobs in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and it must be treated with the respect it deserves."

"I think the people that did it were not around on 9-11. They weren’t here yet, they don’t know the significance of that day and the people who sacrificed," said Luccioni.

"Whoever took these rocks can’t really do anything with them, so it’s really a matter of them coming forward or someone knowing who they are, so we can get them back," said McNew.
