In the first round of the Division 1 state girls hockey tournament, Notre Dame Academy flexed its offensive muscles.

The third-seeded Cougars (11-5-4) erupted offensively to take down No. 30 Beverly, 7-2, on Tuesday night. Juliana Conors aided the strong offensive showing by netting two goals in the win while Maggie Donahue registered a goal and two assists. Lauren White chipped in as well with a goal and an assist.

Notre Dame now awaits the winner of Pope Francis and Quincy/North Quincy in the second round with a time and date still to be determined.

In other high school action:

GIRLS HOCKEY

Pembroke 4, Walpole 0: Behind a three-goal second period, the fourth-seeded Titans (16-5) took down No. 29 Walpole in Div. 2 state first round action. Erin Doran, Maria Cantino, Jennifer Birolini and Mary Quatrale had solo tallies. Kaleigh Murphy recorded the shutout in the win. Pembroke advances to face No. 13 Archbishop Williams on Monday (5 p.m.).

Canton 4, Watertown 2: The No. 9 Bulldogs (15-6) scored three unanswered goals in the Div. 2 first round matchup with Maya Battista accounting for one of those tallies and assisting on two others. Canton advances to the Round of 16 to play the winner No. 8 Andover and No. 25 Franklin.

Bishop Fenwick 2, Plymouth 1 (OT): The No. 13 Crusaders ended 20th-seeded Plymouth's season in heartbreaking fashion in the first round of the Div. 1 state tournament.

Braintree 2, Hanover 1: Emma Walsh and Savanna Littlewood scored as the second-seeded Wamps (15-5-1) turned away an upset bid by No. 31 Hanover (8-9-2) to secure a spot in the Div. 2 state tournament's Round of 16. The Wamps will play the winner of Saturday's game between No. 15 Winchester (13-3-4) and No. 18 Welleley (11-8-1). Abby Hanna scored with 5:56 remaining to bring the Hawks within a goal, but couldn't put another one past Braintree goalie Eva Surette (11 saves).

BOYS HOCKEY

West Springfield 2, Pembroke 1: The No. 21 Titans (4-17) were denied of their upset bid in the first round of the Div. 3 state tournament. Anthony Birolini scored his 21st goal of the season in the loss.

Shawsheen 5, West/East Bridgewater 4 (OT): Despite a valiant effort, No. 21 WEB (10-9-3) suffered heartbreak in the first round of the Div. 4 state tournament. Anthony Patete provided four assists in the loss while teammate Sam Hall scored twice. Brett Peterson (one goal, two assists) and Sean Noonan (goal) also chipped in.

Braintree 5, Framingham 1: The No. 9 Wamps (16-3-2) used a three-goal first period to dispatch their Bay State Conference rival in the first round of the Div. 1 state tournament. Braintree advances to face No. 8 Pope Francis.

BC High 3, Milton 2: In a tightly contested Div. 1 state first round matchup, Jack Murphy's goal late in the third period proved to be the difference for the No. 13 Eagles (8-12-1). James Marshall netted the other two goals for BC High. For No. 20 Milton (14-8), Owen McHugh and Joe Pender found the back of the net. BC High will play the winner of Saturday's game between No. 4 Catholic Memorial and No. 29 Arlington Catholic.

Marblehead 5, Whitman-Hanson 3: The No. 18 Panthers (9-12) almost erased a three-goal deficit with tallies from Luke Tropeano and Alex Ethier, but couldn't complete the comeback against the No. 15 Magicians in the first round of the Division 2 state tournament. Matt Solari also scored in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Brockton 59, Lexington 58: The No. 26 Boxers (13-9) marched on by narrowly taking down the seventh-seeded Minutemen on the road in the first round of the Div. 1 state tournament. Niko Lutz posted a big double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the win while Cameron Monteiro (19 points) and Dajon Burton (12 points) contributed as well to help lead the offense.

Baystate Academy 50, Holbrook 39: The No. 34 Bulldogs (12-9) couldn't pull off the upset.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Springfield ICS 54, South Shore Voke 33: Ellery Campbell led the way with 21 points, but it wasn't enough for the Vikings (17-5) to advance past the first round of the Div. 5 state tournament.
