South Carolina unveils special throwback football uniform combo
The Battle Armor hype videos are back.
In a video posted on Saturday afternoon to social media, South Carolina revealed it will wear a 1980 season-inspired throwback uniform combo for its Sept. 21 home game against Akron.
The most recognizable throwback element are the stars on the front of a white helmet, made famous during the era of running back George Rogers. The combo will include garnet jerseys and white pants. The throwback look will also feature a star on the pants, according to Saturday’s reveal.
The look is “in honor of George Rogers and the 1980 team,” USC confirmed in a promotional email.
Rogers — the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner — is among the four Gamecocks to have his number and jersey retired. The school nowadays only retires jerseys and keeps the numbers in circulation.
The Akron game will come in Week Four of the season. It will be a night kickoff, with the exact time to be determined.
The Gamecocks begin their 2024 campaign at home against Old Dominion (Aug. 31), at Kentucky (Sept. 7) and vs. LSU (Sept. 14) before they get to show off the throwbacks.
USC has not revealed any other planned uniform combos.
